Sediment control

During land reclamation and other works where silt plumes are generated, the migration of dredged silt into open water can be harmful to the existing vegetation and wildlife.

Silt screens are placed as a protective barrier in the water around a site.

They allow for containment of water that holds the sediment in a restricted area. They also protect contained water from turbulence, allowing particles to fall out of suspension. This solution is typically used within a water body and along shorelines for the duration of the work causing the turbidity.

A silt screen consists of a woven fabric wrapped around a flotation tube. The ballast at the bottom ensures that the screen is under light vertical tension to prevent it from floating to the surface.

The ballast can also provide an anchoring function to keep the silt screen in place when it is in contact with the sea or river bed.
