Landfills
Landfills are a common way of managing our disposal of regular waste. To ensure landfills will not cause any environmental harm we need to prevent leachate and methane gas – side effects of collecting waste in landfills – from reaching our environment. This is controlled by ‘wrapping’ the landfill in an impermeable package, including layers of clay liners or geomembranes, protection layers and controlled drainage layers. On top, the package is ultimately covered with soil.
